1940-1945. The resistance in the dutch province of Limburg

Aid to escaped POW’s

Among their POWs, the Nazis had established a kind of class society. The best treatment was given to soldiers with a Germanic mother tongue. They were released as early as 1940, because at the beginning of the war the Nazis still hoped to win members of these ‘ fraternal peoples’ for National Socialism. The French-speaking prisoners of war were considered second-class Aryans and were treated much worse. Below they are discussed in particular. The lowest level was formed by the Eastern European and even more so the Asian POWs from the Soviet Union. In the eyes of the Nazis, they were subhumans (Untermenschen). A typical example of the treatment of these wretched people were the Uzbeks in camp Amersfoort.
According to the Geneva Convention, it is allowed to deploy prisoners of war who belong to the lower ranks (i.e. not officers and non-commissioned officers) for work, but not in the arms industry. This rule was observed less and less as the war progressed. At the same time, the treatment of the prisoners of war got worse and worse.
From the POW camps in western Germany, people escaped to the occupied territories right from the beginning of the war. Most of them had to go back and forth daily (under guard) between the camp and the place, where they performed forced labor, which increased their chances of escaping.
The help to these people played an important role in the emergence of organized resistance in Limburg.
