Limburg 1940-1945,
Main Menu
Near Margraten is the only US American military cemetery in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was founded during the war, a few weeks after the liberation of Margraten, in anticipation of the many deaths that the war still would cost in the conquest of Germany. If possible, they did not want to bury them in enemy territory, so this place, close to the German border, was very suitable. The fallen were initially buried by the 960th Quartermaster Service Company and, beginning in mid-December 1944, by the 3136th Quartermaster Service Company, both consisting of black soldiers. One positive consequence of this discrimination for those involved was that it increased their chance of survival.
The municipality and people of Margraten provided a great deal of support, including the adoption of graves.
