During the Second World War, Brunssum played a leading role in the smuggling of Jewish children from Amsterdam to the south of the Netherlands. Hundreds of children were taken into care in the mining town, including the later minister and Amsterdam mayor Ed van Thijn. [1]
“There is no other region in the Netherlands that had such a high density of hiding places as Brunssum,” says Arie de Zeeuw from the Jack Aldewereld Stichting. “We found out about this from the Mapping Hiding Places [2] foundation, with whom we collaborate.”
Local LO leader Father W. van der Geest and one of his deputies, Herman Stakenborg, were the driving forces behind this aid to Jews. They took in Jewish children through the specialized NV group. Van der Geest had his own channels for the adults.
A good example of how the community spirit worked in Brunssum was the story of the temporary hiding of Jewish children in the dressing cubicles of a swimming complex because of an expected raid. [3]
The Vermeer family, living on Prins Hendriklaan, played a very important role in the Brunssum community who helped people in hiding. Although the family had eleven children, there was always room for people in hiding. Many Jewish children found a safe hiding address in and through this family. The house of the Vermeer family was also called the “rubber house” because it sometimes housed 25 to 30 people. [4]
