The fallen resistance people in Limburg
Toon Peeters, popularly known as blacksmith Toontje, was a blacksmith and bicycle dealer. [1]
Cammaert writes about him:
In Broekhuizen and Broekhuizenvorst the teacher J.H. van Megen, in collaboration with A. Reijnders and P.A.J. Peeters, founded the LO. [2]
He was also part of the independent Tienray resistance group around Hanna van de Voort. The core of the resistance group consisted of Hanna van de Voort, Nico Dohmen, Kurt Löwenstein and Toontje Peeters, who also managed to obtain many addresses for Jewish children. [3]
In the Book of the Dead of the Oranjehotel it says about him: spied for the Allies, provided aid to pilots, Jews, etc. [4] and to escaped prisoners of war. [1]
Arrested on November 16, 1943, as a result of betrayal by the provocateur Vastenhout [2] (the Englandspiel) and finally sentenced to “Nacht und Nebel” (night and fog) [5], which meant making resisters disappear without a trace. Stayed in various camps, returned in May 1945 and died in hospital in Venlo as a result of his privations. [6]
