Sef Frantzen
(Josephus Wilhelmus Hubertus)

 07-04-1911 Maastricht      04-07-1994 (83)
- Civil Servants - Ordedienst (O.D.) - Aid to People in Hiding L.O. - Knokploegen (K.P.) - Aid to Jews - Aid to escaped POW’s - Pilots’ helpers - Survivors - Maastricht - Swalmen -

Birth certificate 12.059-70 Maastricht, Limburg Civil Registry. [1]

Sef Frantzen was a brother of Leon Frantzen in Horn, with whom he collaborated. [2.1]
J.W.H. Frantzen of Swalmen, a brother of the teacher from Horn, was charged with carrying out special missions such as maintaining contact with the prison in Maastricht. L. Frantzen and vicar Janssen had to go into hiding in May and July 1944, respectively, but they remained active in the background. [2.2]
Sef Frantzen was a leading member of both LO/KP and OD.
Frantzen henceforth acted as an intermediary between the two organizations. He and Meulenkamp also became responsible for contact with the jail in Maastricht.

Frantzen would henceforth act as deputy to Crasborn, who represented Limburg and later also North Brabant in the L.K.P. top.
     [2.3]

In the second half of July 1944, at the invitation of J. Frantzen, Crasborn and Van Kooten settled in his home village of Swalmen. They found shelter on the monumental farmstead “De Baxhof” of the Poels family on the outskirts of the village.

In early September an incident occurred, connected with the growing friction between O.D. and K.P. Once again Frantzen played a central role. In accordance with agreements made shortly beforehand between L. Jans, Van Kooten, Crasborn and Frantzen (see Cammaert, chapter VIII, paragraph IV.2.) the latter ordered P.F.A. Driessen to put his men at the disposal of the O.D. When Crasborn heard this, he forbade Driessen to do so. A hastily called meeting in Swalmen between Major General Jans, Crasborn and Van Kooten brought no solution. Frantzen turned his back on the K.P.. Van Kooten immediately succeeded him as deputy provincial K.P. leader.
     [2.4]

Cammaert writes about him in summary: Swalmen, Rijkswaterstaat official. Held various positions in O.D., L.O. and K.P. in Limburg and acted several times as mediator and/or messenger, also between the resistance and the Sipo-Maastricht. In addition, Frantzen provided assistance to (Jewish) people in hiding and Allied refugees. He kept J.L. Moonen, secretary of the diocese of Roermond, informed of developments within the Limburg resistance. [2.5]
In January 1945, the entire population on the still occupied part of the right bank of the Maas was ordered by the Germans to leave their homes to be evacuated. This concerned the strip of Dutch territory between the mouth of the Roer into the Maas to just before Nijmegen. For more on that, see:
The forced evacuation to Friesland, Groningen and Drente and th article "Part 5, Week 2" by Hein van der Bruggen on Roermond in War 1936 - 1945. [3.1]
Sef Frantzen, together with the lawyer Theo Peters, tried to avert that evacuation, unfortunately without result. [3.2]
