Vili Viorel Păun (Photo from the album of the Păun family) [1]
Vili-Viorel Păun was a Roma from Romania and the only child of his parents. He came to Germany in 2013 at the age of 16 to earn money for his mother’s medical treatment. He worked for a courier service. On the evening of February 19, he witnessed the shots at the first crime scene, tried to block the perpetrator’s car with his car and then drove after him. On the way, he called the police several times in vain. At Kurt-Schumacher-Platz, the perpetrator shot him dead in his car. A cross at the place of his death commemorates Păun’s civil courage.[12] He died at the age of 22. On 19 April 2021, he was posthumously honored with the Hessian Medal for Civil Courage.
