Voor de exploitatie van de grote ijzerertslagen in de omgeving van Salzgitter, die al in 1310 voor het eerst werden vermeld, richtten de nationaal-socialisten op 15 juli 1937 de Reichswerke Hermann Göring (Hermann-Göring-Werke) op [1]. Een grote ruimtelijke herindeling en talrijke industriële vestigingen waren het resultaat. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden steeds meer dwangarbeiders ingezet. Zij werden ernstig in levensgevaar gebracht door hun erbarmelijke werkomstandigheden, maar ook door talrijke geallieerde bombardementen.
Er waren veel woon- en werkkampen in de omgeving van Salzgitter. Op den duur werden dat meestal concentratiekampen. [2]
Het grootste stond in Salzgitter-Drütte, een dorp in de gemeente Salzgitter. Het was één van de vele satellietkampen van het concentratiekampsysteem van Neuengamme, was gevestigd op het fabrieksterrein van de Hermann-Göring-Werke en had rond 2800 gevangenen. [3][7]
Het speciale Lager 21 (Arbeitserziehungslager Watenstedt-Hallendorf) (arbeids “opvoedings” kamp!) werd in maart 1940 vanuit de "Göringwerke" opgericht als strafkamp voor buitenlandse dwangarbeiders en om de Duitse bevolking af te schrikken en te disciplineren in de buurt van wat nu het stadsdeel Hallendorf van de stad Salzgitter is. Een bijzonder strenge straf was het werk in de gloeiend hete slakken in Salzgitter-Drütte, dat de gevangenen "Schlacke-Drütte" noemden en vreesden. Doden, ernstige brandwonden of bijvoorbeeld gasvergiftigingen waren tijdens deze werkzaamheden te verwachten. Tenminste 300 gevangenen kwamen daarbij om het leven. Alleen al de bewaker Fritz Panske schoot 60 gevangenen dood bij het commando Schlacke-Drütte. [4]
Lager 24 in Reppner was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als woonkamp voor bouwvakkers, werd later omgebouwd tot concentratiekamp en werd al gauw "Dodenkamp 24" genoemd. [5]
Het dorp Watenstedt telde 380 inwoners in 1933. Dit veranderde abrupt met de bouw van de Hermann-Göring-Werke en de nabijgelegen staalfabriek Braunschweig vanaf 1937. Rond Watenstedt ontstonden talrijke werkkampen; eind augustus 1943 werden 16992 bewoners gemeld [6].
