De Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen ligt ongeveer 60 kilometer ten noordoosten van Hannover.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog was hier een krijgsgevangenenkamp van de Wehrmacht (het toenmalige Duitse leger). De meeste van de ongeveer 20.000 slachtoffers waren Sovjetische krijgsgevangenen. Ze werden begraven op de begraafplaats van het kamp, een kilometer verderop.
In 1943 richtte de SS op een deel van het terrein een concentratiekamp in. Ten minste 52.000 mannen, vrouwen en kinderen stierven hier, de meesten van hen in de laatste maanden van de oorlog. Toen het kamp op 15 april 1945 werd bevrijd, vonden Britse soldaten duizenden onbegraven lijken en doodzieke tot op het bot vermagerde mensen.
De doden van het concentratiekamp werden begraven in massagraven op het kampterrein. Graven, gedenktekens en gedenkstenen herdenken hun lijden en dood. Slechts enkele funderingen wijzen nog op het vroegere kamp.
Na de bevrijding werd in de nabijgelegen voormalige Wehrmachtkazerne een kamp voor ontheemden ingericht. Tot 1950 woonden hier tot 12.000 mensen in het grootste Joodse Displaced Persons (ontwortelden) kamp van Duitsland.
