The fallen resistance people in Limburg
Where was Cornelis van den Broek born?
According to the OGS [1] in Heer, which was also adopted by maastrichtsegevelstenen.nl [2]. But in his personal file at the OGS it says Heelde [3#4], but also Heer [3#7]
Cornelis van den Broek was a corporal of the Marines in Den Helder [4] until the surrender of the Dutch forces in May 1940. During the war he worked as Opperwachtmeester at the police in Rotterdam at the Hoflaan. He belonged to the KP (Knokploeg, armed group) in Rotterdam. On oorlogsgravenstichting.nl we read about him [1]:
On February 28, 1945, after being betrayed by a police officer, he was arrested by the Germans and imprisoned in Scheveningen prison. During World War II, this building was used for trials and executions and was nicknamed the Oranje-Hotel [5] After an attack on a member of the security police and one of the Dutch SS on March 5, 1945, Cornelis van den Broek was executed on the Pleinweg in Rotterdam on March 12, 1945 in retaliation. [4]
On March 5, 1945, a German SD officer Röhmer and the Dutch SS man Koster were shot in Rotterdam South at the corner of Goereesestraat and Pleinweg. Although it seemed that this was a work of the resistance, this did not seem to be the case this time. The assassination was probably carried out by a bicycle thief who had been caught. [6]
His name is on the war memorial [7] on the Pleinweg. [4]
Cornelis /Cornelius van den Broek is listed in the Erelijst 1940-1945 (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [8]
Reburied on the National Field of Honor in Loenen, grave E 812 [3#11][9]
