Hij stelt daarin op p. 371 vast, dat er voor het redden van een bovengemiddeld aantal Joden twee factoren een belangrijke rol speelden:

1. Een hecht samenwerkende groep waarin men elkaar zeer goed kende, bij voorkeur al van voor de oorlog, en
2. de aanwezigheid van inspirerende mensen, die het voortouw namen.

Samengevat: „Een kleine groep morele leiders in Limburg wees de weg van de praktische naastenliefde. Hun goede voorbeeld deed goed volgen.“
Hij stelt vast, dat het punt 2 bij de aantallen van geredde joden een doorslaggevende rol speelde. [1, p.371]
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden in Nederlands Limburg ongeveer duizend mensen om racistische redenen weggevoerd naar hun gewelddadige dood, schrijft Van Rens in zijn inleiding, daarvan het overgrote deel joden. Uitgebreide tabellen vindt u aan het einde van zijn boek.
Toen de deportaties van de joden begonnen, begrepen veel mensen, ook de meeste joden zelf, niet meteen de ernst van de zaak. Men wilde de propaganda geloven, dat het „slechts“ om een gedwongen emigratie ging omdat de waarheid over de vernietigings­kampen nog niet was doorgedrongen. Er waren natuurlijk ook mensen, die tijdig waren ondergedoken of geëmigreerd, maar daar was geld voor nodig. Op een duikadres moest vaak voor kost en inwoning betaald worden. Onder de armere Joden zijn dan ook verhoudings­gewijs meer slachtoffers gevallen. Dat verbeterde na de oprichting van de LO, omdat die ook voor geld en rantsoenbonnen zorgde.
Alleen al op 25 augustus 1942 werden honderden Limburgse Joden gearresteerd en weggevoerd. Zij werden verzameld in het schoolgebouw aan de Professor Pieter Willemsstraat achter het station in Maastricht. De meesten van hen werden op 28 augustus vanuit Westerbork gedeporteerd. [2]
Hoewel er zoveel mensen zijn vermoord, waren er toch aan het einde van de oorlog in Limburg meer joden dan daarvoor, maar daarbij ging het vaak om andere mensen, vooral om vluchtelingen uit het westen van het land.
Er was één verzetsorganisatie die volledig was gespecialiseerd in het redden en huisvesten van vooral joodse kinderen, die vooral afkomstig waren uit de crèche tegenover de Hollandsche Schouwburg [3.1] in Amsterdam, die allebei door de nazi’s als verzamelplaatsen voor de deportaties werden gebruikt. Die groep noemde zich NV, wat bewust was afgeleid van de afkorting voor Naamloze Vennootschap en was opgericht door de gebroeders Musch. Van de honderden geredde kinderen is er niet één in de handen van de nationaalsocialisten gevallen. Ga voor meer informatie naar de NV. [3.2]
Na de bevrijding van grote delen van Limburg konden de de onderduikers weer opduiken, ook de joden. Maar velen konden nog niet naar huis, omdat dat nog in Duitse handen was. Vooral niet-Nederlandse Joden kregen in sommige gemeenten aanvankelijk geen uitkering en of onderdak.
Op 25 november 1941 hadden de gevluchte Duitse en Oostenrijkse joden in Nederland de Duitse nationaliteit verloren en waren statenloos geworden. In Limburg waren dat ongeveer 600 personen. [1, p.94]

Om oorlogsgetroffenen zoveel mogelijk schadeloos te stellen had de regering het Herstelfonds in het leven geroepen. Via de gemeente kon een persoon een beroep hierop doen. Vooral in de beginfase na de bevrijding weigerden gemeenten verzoeken van statenloze joden te behandelen. Het CIB (een afdeling van de Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten [4]) moest druk uitoefenen om de burgemeester overstag te doen gaan. De burgemeester van Obbicht en Papenhoven was niet bereid om de in die gemeente opgedoken familie Katz (4 personen) financieel te ondersteunen uit het Herstelfonds, omdat de familie van Duitse afkomst was. [1, p.325]
Ook in Limburg kwamen mensen weer naar huis, die ofwel de kampen overleefd hadden of ondergedoken waren geweest en nu hun vooroorlogse leven weer wilden voortzetten. Vaak hadden ze waardevolle dingen bij mensen, die na de oorlog de naam ‘bewariërs’ kregen. Meestal was de vreugde over het weerzien groot en kregen de thuiskomers hun spullen meteen terug. De joden die op deze website worden genoemd, kunnen we in drie groepen indelen, die elkaar natuurlijk ten dele overlappen: de joodse verzetsmensen, de slachtoffers van de Shoa en de ondergedoken joden. De mensen van groep 2 en 3 hebben voor het overgrote deel met Valkenburg en omgeving te maken: die van groep 2 woonden daar, van groep 3 zaten er ondergedoken.
