Een belangrijk deel van het verzetswerk was vooral in de grensprovincie Limburg al vroeg het opzetten van ontsnappingslijnen voor uit Duitsland ontvluchte krijgsgevangenen, later ook voor vluchtende Joden, neergeschoten geallieerde vliegtuigbemanningen (meestal piloten genoemd) en Nederlanders op weg naar Engeland. Vanuit Duitsland en Nederland liep een van die lijnen via Eijsden (NL) naar Voeren (B), het Land van Herve en Luik, vanwaar de vluchtelingen naar Givet aan de Franse grens of naar Brussel werden gebracht, waar andere verzetsgroepen ze overnamen. De eersten waren de uit krijgsgevangenschap gevluchte Fransen en Belgen. Dat begon al in 1940. Zij klopten vaak om hulp aan bij kerken.
In de loop van 1941 ontstond daardoor in het grensplaatsje Eijsden een verzetsgroep vanuit het plaatselijke harmonieorkest Sainte Cécile: de fruitkweker Alphons Smeets met zijn hele gezin, het echtpaar De Liedekerke, douanier D. Sleeuwenhoek (die vrijelijk over de grens heen en weer kon en wist wanneer er patrouilles liepen) en de Luikse dirigent Arthur Renkin. (Cammaert 75-94, 135, 239-240). Zij legden via Renkin grensoverschrijdende contacten met verzetsmensen in de provincie Luik van de organisaties Luc /Marc en Clarence zoals de arts Jules Goffin uit ’s-Gravenvoeren, Christiane Derenne-Lamazière, de paters Hugo (Karel Jacobs) en Stephanus (Piet Muhren) uit de abdij van Val-Dieu en anderen. Ook in de provincie Luik waren behalve oud-militairen vaak parochiegeestelijken actief. Een belangrijk aanlooppunt was de rijkswacht in St.-Martensvoeren waar Theodoor Brentjens, geboren te Kessenich op 12 januari 1894, commandant was. Deze zorgde er dan voor dat de krijgsgevangenen terechtkwamen in de boerderij Monnikenhof die afhing van de abdij Val-Dieu.
Clarence was vooral een inlichtingendienst, zij verzamelden bijvoorbeeld inlichtingen over het treinverkeer rond het belangrijke spoorwegknooppunt Visé. Een belangrijk veiligheidsprincipe vooral van Clarence was, dat men per persoon maar één activiteit ontplooide: ofwel inlichtingen, ofwel het smokkelen van door de Duitsers gezochten, het verbergen van onderduikers. Bij de groep Erkens werd daar niet zo streng de hand aan gehouden, wat hun latere ondergang nog zou bevorderen. Niek Erkens kwam met deze groep in contact via Pierre Dresen.
Zij werden geïnfiltreerd door het Groningse filiaal de Duitse Marineabwehr (contraspionagedienst van de Duitse marine), die daarvoor het dodelijke „Hannibalspiel“ opzette. Er werden maar liefst vier infiltranten ingezet, die door de naïviteit van Erkens en vooral van Renkin steeds dieper in het netwerk wisten door te dringen. Na de arrestatie moest vooral Erkens het ontgelden.
Dat betekende het einde van de groep Erkens aan de Nederlandse kant en een grote slag voor de organisaties “Luc/Marc” en “Clarence” in België. In totaal arresteerden de Duitsers van deze groepen tussen 8 juni 1942 en 19 maart 1943 86 personen. 30 personen kwamen na een korte gevangenschap weer op vrije voeten; 18 personen werden na berechting vrijgelaten; 22 personen werden naar Duitse kampen gedeporteerd van wie elf de oorlog niet overleefden. Elf personen werden ter dood veroordeeld en op 9 oktober 1943 in het fort Rhijnauwen (Bunnik bij Utrecht) doodgeschoten.
